How Your Bedroom Can Revitalise Your Mornings
A new year often inspires fresh goals—whether it’s taking on DIY projects, staying active, or reading more. But could your bedroom design help you stay motivated?
We surveyed our community to understand their winter morning routines and what helps them start the day feeling refreshed.
Winter Morning Habits
Getting out of bed during the colder months is a challenge, yet certain design choices make a big difference. Instead of traditional warm “cosy” colours, most people preferred soft neutrals like white, stone, and beige. These calming, uplifting shades are linked to clarity and tranquillity, helping you start the day with a clear mind.
Morning Motivators
When asked what helps them feel refreshed in the morning, our community highlighted:
Breathable bed linen
A comfortable mattress
Waking up naturally
Avoiding alcohol before bed
The right pillow
A quiet room
A comfortable mattress was the top contributor to feeling energised, followed closely by waking naturally without an alarm. Half of respondents also said warm lighting made the biggest positive impact—more than stretching space or a coffee nook.
Common morning habits included making the bed, eating a healthy breakfast, and letting in fresh air. Practices like meditating, yoga, or affirmations were far less frequent.
Light or Dark Bedroom?
Lighting has a major influence on mood and alertness. Exposure to bright, warm light in the morning helps reduce sleep inertia—the grogginess that can linger for up to 90 minutes. While natural light is ideal, you don’t need to sleep with the blinds open. Gradually brightening lights, especially warm red-toned ones, provide a gentle wake-up without harsh alarms.
Total darkness at night remains important for quality sleep, unless your blinds can open automatically in the morning.
Five Tips to Wake Up Happier
Tidy your bedroom before bed to create a calm start to the next day.
Let light in immediately—open curtains or switch on lights to help your body wake naturally.
Skip the snooze button, as it often worsens morning grogginess.
Lay out clothes the night before to reduce stress and save time.
Make your bed to set a productive tone for the day.
